Project Blue Book Case #7491. On July 7, 1961, witnesses near Copemish, Michigan — a small community in Manistee County in the northwestern Lower Peninsula — observed a bright object in the sky. Copemish sits in a landscape of forests, orchards, and small lakes, far from major population centers and air corridors.
Northern Michigan's rural character provided dark skies and minimal competing light sources. The nearest significant air traffic came from Traverse City's Cherry Capital Airport and occasional military flights from Wurtsmith AFB on the Lake Huron shore. The object observed near Copemish did not match any expected traffic.
Michigan continued to produce Blue Book unknowns throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, building toward the state's extraordinary 1966 wave. The northern Lower Peninsula, while less dramatic than the Detroit-area sightings, contributed its share of credible reports from rural observers with unobstructed sky views.
No conventional explanation was found. The case was classified "Unknown."
