Project Blue Book Case #1928. On August 19, 1952, witnesses in Red Bluff, California — a small city in the northern Sacramento Valley — observed a bright object in the sky. Red Bluff sits at the head of the valley where the Sacramento River emerges from the Cascade Range foothills, in terrain of rolling oak grasslands with clear, wide-open views.
Red Bluff's position in northern California placed it within range of several military installations: Beale AFB to the south (which would later host SR-71 Blackbirds), McClellan AFB near Sacramento, and Mather AFB. The northern Sacramento Valley was also beneath commercial air routes connecting the Pacific Northwest with the San Francisco Bay Area.
August 1952 was at the peak of the great wave. California contributed dozens of cases during this period, reflecting both the state's large population and its extraordinary concentration of military and aerospace activity. Red Bluff's relatively small size and rural character made it an unusual source — suggesting the phenomenon was not confined to major military areas.
The object's brightness and controlled movement were inconsistent with any known aircraft or natural phenomenon. The Sacramento Valley's clear, dry summer atmosphere provided excellent visibility. No correlation was found with military or civilian flight operations. The case was classified "Unknown."
