Project Blue Book Case #7930. On May 26, 1962, witnesses in Westfield, Massachusetts, observed a bright object in the sky. Westfield sits in the Connecticut River valley approximately 10 miles west of Springfield and just south of Westover Air Force Base — one of SAC's major East Coast bomber installations, home to B-52 Stratofortresses carrying nuclear weapons on alert.
Westover's bombers could be airborne within minutes of a launch order, and the base's runway was one of the longest on the East Coast. The security of Westover's airspace was critical to the nuclear deterrent. Any unidentified object near the base demanded investigation.
The case was classified "Unknown."
