Project Blue Book Case #1269. On June 12, 1952, a bright object was observed over Fort Smith, Arkansas — a city on the Oklahoma border named after the historic frontier military post. Fort Chaffee, a major Army training center, was located adjacent to the city and would have been the primary source of military activity in the area.
Fort Smith sits at the confluence of the Arkansas and Poteau rivers, at the edge of the Ozark Mountains. The city's position along the Arkansas-Oklahoma border placed it within range of military operations from Fort Chaffee, Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City, and various other installations in the region.
June 1952 was in the building phase toward the July wave. Fort Smith's contribution to the growing number of reports reflected the nationwide pattern of accelerating sightings. The object's brightness and behavior were inconsistent with the military and civilian traffic typical of the western Arkansas corridor.
No conventional explanation was found. The case was classified "Unknown."
