Arnold's Bar and Grill in Cincinnati, Ohio, is the oldest continuously operated bar in the city, established in 1861. The building has served as a saloon, a boarding house, and a gathering place through the Civil War, Prohibition, and every era since. With over 160 years of continuous operation, Arnold's has accumulated generations of regulars — and some of them apparently never left. Staff and patrons have reported seeing the apparition of a man in 19th-century clothing sitting at the end of the bar, who disappears when the bartender approaches to take his order. In the basement, which dates to the pre-Civil War era, workers have described hearing voices in conversation, footsteps on the stone floor, and the clink of glassware. Some employees have reported feeling a presence behind them while working alone in the cellar, turning to find no one there. The upper floors, which once served as boarding rooms, produce reports of footsteps and doors opening and closing. One staff member described seeing a woman in a long dress descend the staircase and walk through the bar before vanishing through the back wall. Arnold's embraces its haunted reputation as part of its historic character, and the bar's atmospheric interior — with its worn wooden bar, tin ceiling, and exposed brick — feels like a portal to another era.
