The Amazing Kengtung Resort in Kengtung (Kyaingtong), Shan State, Myanmar, occupies a former royal palace of the Shan princes. The palace, which served as the seat of the Kengtung sawbwa (hereditary ruler) for generations, was converted into a hotel after Myanmar's military government abolished the traditional Shan aristocracy. The spirits of former Shan royalty are said to inhabit the building. Guests have reported seeing the full apparition of figures in traditional Shan royal dress — elaborate silk longyi, jeweled headdresses, and court attire — walking through the corridors and standing in the former throne room. The most commonly described ghost is a woman in royal Shan clothing who appears in the gardens, looking out over the Kengtung valley as though surveying her former domain. Staff describe hearing traditional Shan music — the sound of the shan harp and percussion instruments — playing in the empty ceremonial halls at night. The resort's setting in the remote eastern Shan hills, surrounded by tea plantations and Buddhist monasteries, gives it a profound sense of isolation. The hotel is one of the few places in Myanmar where guests can sleep in a genuine royal palace, and the royal ghosts are treated by local staff as the building's true owners.
