Project Blue Book Case #2524. On March 27, 1953, an unidentified object was observed near Mount Taylor, New Mexico — an 11,301-foot peak sacred to multiple Native American tribes and, in the 1950s, the center of one of the world's largest uranium mining districts. The Grants Uranium Belt surrounding Mount Taylor supplied the raw material for America's nuclear weapons program.
The significance of uranium mining to the nuclear corridor cannot be overstated. The ore extracted from the Grants Belt was processed into yellowcake and eventually enriched into weapons-grade material at facilities like Oak Ridge and Paducah. Any unidentified object near the uranium supply chain was of interest to both the AEC and military intelligence.
Mount Taylor rises dramatically from the surrounding high desert plateau between Albuquerque and Gallup, providing a distinctive landmark visible for many miles. The mountain's elevation and the clear New Mexico atmosphere offered excellent conditions for aerial observation.
New Mexico continued to be one of the most active states for Blue Book unknowns, with the concentration of nuclear facilities, missile ranges, and research laboratories creating an unmatched density of sensitive installations. The Mount Taylor sighting added a new category of nuclear-related location — the uranium source itself — to the pattern.
The case was classified "Unknown."
