Project Blue Book Case #2220. On November 13, 1952, an unidentified object was observed in the area between Glasgow and Opheim in northeastern Montana — remote prairie communities near the Canadian border. Glasgow AFB (later reactivated as a SAC installation) was located nearby, and the region would eventually host part of the Minuteman ICBM missile field.
The Montana-Saskatchewan border region was among the most strategically significant landscapes in North America. Soviet bombers approaching on the polar route would cross into U.S. airspace in precisely this area, and the air defense radar network maintained close surveillance of these northern approaches.
Glasgow and Opheim sit on the Hi-Line — the northern transcontinental corridor across Montana's vast prairies. The terrain is flat, treeless, and sparsely populated, providing sightlines extending to the horizon in every direction. In November, the early onset of winter darkness meant extended hours of dark-sky observation.
The object could not be identified through air defense channels. The case was classified "Unknown."
