The Black Hope Horror refers to a series of paranormal events experienced by families in the Newport subdivision of Crosby, Texas, beginning in the 1980s. The subdivision was built on the site of an old cemetery for formerly enslaved African Americans, and the developers had not disclosed this to homebuyers. When residents began digging in their yards and discovered human remains, the community was horrified. The Haney family, who documented their experiences in the book 'The Black Hope Horror,' described a sustained period of terrifying phenomena after they inadvertently disturbed graves while planting in their backyard. They reported sinkholes appearing in their yard, the sound of voices and moaning rising from the ground, objects being thrown by unseen forces inside their home, and apparitions of figures in the house and yard. Other families in the subdivision reported similar experiences — unexplained illnesses, objects moving on their own, and the feeling of being watched from beneath the ground. Some families reported seeing spectral figures standing in their yards at night. The case drew national media attention and became the basis for the 1992 TV movie 'Grave Secrets: The Legacy of Hilltop Drive.' Several families ultimately abandoned their homes, unable to cope with the constant disturbances.
