Sunriver Resort in Central Oregon was built on the site of Camp Abbot, a World War II military training center that operated from 1943 to 1944. The camp trained thousands of Army engineers for combat duty in the Pacific Theater, and although it was primarily a training facility, the intense conditions and the weight of wartime purpose left an impression on the land. The resort's Great Hall, which incorporates the original camp's lodge building, is the site of most reported paranormal activity. Staff have described poltergeist-like phenomena including objects being moved overnight, doors slamming shut in the absence of any breeze, and the sound of military-style boots marching on the wooden floors. Some guests have reported seeing a soldier in World War II-era uniform standing near the Great Hall's massive stone fireplace, watching the room with an expression of focused attention before fading from view. The surrounding forest — where camp obstacle courses and training areas once stood — has produced reports of voices calling out military commands and the distant sound of marching. Sunriver's location in the high desert of Central Oregon, surrounded by ponderosa pines with the Cascade mountains as a backdrop, gives the resort a natural grandeur that makes the occasional military ghost feel like an echo from another time.
