Project Blue Book Case #8434. On July 1, 1963, witnesses in Glen Ellyn, Illinois — an affluent western suburb of Chicago in DuPage County — observed a silent, bright object moving through the evening sky. The object's silence at its apparent altitude was particularly noteworthy, as any conventional aircraft close enough to appear as bright as described would have been clearly audible.
Glen Ellyn sits approximately 25 miles west of downtown Chicago, beneath the approach corridors for O'Hare International Airport — by 1963, the busiest airport in the world. Residents of western DuPage County lived under a near-constant procession of commercial aircraft, making them exceptionally experienced at distinguishing normal air traffic from anomalous objects. For a Glen Ellyn witness to report something unusual, the object had to be genuinely outside the norm.
The 1963 timing fell during a period of moderate UFO activity between the major waves. Blue Book, under the direction of Major Hector Quintanilla, was processing cases at a steady but manageable rate, allowing more thorough investigation than during wave periods.
The object's defining characteristics were its brightness — exceeding that of aircraft landing or navigation lights — and its complete silence. No engine noise, no rotor sound, no sonic disturbance. Combined with its apparent proximity, the silence ruled out conventional jet or propeller aircraft.
O'Hare approach control and regional air traffic facilities were checked. No aircraft matched the sighting. The case was classified "Unknown."
