Project Blue Book Case #9915. On the night of September 3, 1965, two Brazoria County sheriff's deputies — Chief Deputy Billy McCoy and Deputy Robert Goode — encountered a massive, brilliantly illuminated object while on patrol near the small community of Damon, Texas. The case became one of the most compelling law enforcement encounters in Blue Book history.
The deputies were driving south on Highway 36 when they observed a large, dark object with a brilliant purple light on one end and a pale blue light on the other. The object was enormous — estimated at 200 feet long and 40-50 feet in diameter — and hovered approximately 100 feet above the road. As the deputies slowed their patrol car, the object moved toward them, passing directly overhead.
Deputy Goode, who was driving, later reported that the purple light was so intense it illuminated the inside of the car and the surrounding terrain. Both men could feel warmth emanating from the object. The encounter lasted several minutes, during which the deputies attempted to contact their dispatcher but experienced radio interference. The object eventually rose and departed at high speed.
The case was investigated by Blue Book and received significant media attention. The credibility of the witnesses — sworn law enforcement officers on duty — was difficult to challenge. The physical effects reported (heat, radio interference) elevated it beyond a simple visual sighting. Both deputies submitted detailed written reports and agreed to interviews.
J. Allen Hynek, Blue Book's scientific consultant, considered the Damon case one of the program's most credible reports. It was classified "Unknown."
