Project Blue Book Case #2045. On September 6, 1952, military personnel at Lake Charles Air Force Base in Louisiana observed another unidentified object — the second Blue Book unknown from this jet training base in less than a month, following Case #1870 from August 9. The recurrence of unexplained sightings at the same installation heightened the case's significance.
The fact that Lake Charles AFB produced two unknowns in rapid succession was unusual even during the high-activity summer of 1952. While some bases reported single cases, repeat unknowns from the same facility suggested either a genuine concentration of anomalous activity or a particularly observant and reporting-conscious population of witnesses — both possibilities worth noting.
Lake Charles AFB's jet training mission meant that its skies were busy with high-performance aircraft during daylight hours. The F-84 Thunderjets and T-33 trainers that flew from the base were well-known to everyone on the installation. The September object, like its August predecessor, did not match any training flight or visiting aircraft.
By September 1952, the great wave was subsiding but still producing cases at elevated rates. Blue Book's Captain Edward Ruppelt was attempting to analyze the wave's patterns, and repeat sightings at specific locations were of particular interest to his team.
The case was classified "Unknown" — making Lake Charles AFB one of the few installations to contribute multiple unknowns during the 1952 wave.
