Old Fort Erie in Fort Erie, Ontario, was the site of some of the bloodiest fighting of the War of 1812, including the Siege of Fort Erie in 1814, one of the deadliest engagements on Canadian soil. American and British forces fought fierce battles in and around the fort, and the explosion of the fort's main magazine killed hundreds of soldiers in a single instant. The reconstructed fort, now a National Historic Site, has been featured on Ghost Adventures and the Canadian show Knock Knock Ghost. Visitors and staff report extensive poltergeist activity including objects being thrown, doors slamming shut, and the sound of musket fire and explosions echoing from the empty fortifications. Shadow figures have been seen moving along the ramparts, and some visitors have described being physically pushed by unseen forces in the magazine area where the catastrophic explosion occurred. The fort's most persistent ghost is said to be a British soldier who appears at the main gate, still standing guard over two centuries after the battle. The fort's location on the Canadian shore of the Niagara River, with views across to the American side, serves as a constant reminder of the conflict that defined the border between the two nations.
