Project Blue Book Case #404. On May 27, 1949, an unidentified object was reported over southern Oregon — the mountainous region where the Cascade and Siskiyou ranges converge near the California border. The Pacific Northwest continued to produce cases two years after Kenneth Arnold's sighting had launched the modern UFO era in this same region.
Southern Oregon's rugged terrain of old-growth forests, volcanic peaks, and deep river canyons provided remote observation conditions with minimal air traffic and zero light pollution. The area's distance from military installations simplified investigation, though Klamath Falls Naval Air Station operated in the region.
May 1949 was during the Project Grudge era. The case was classified "Unknown."
