The Nevada Governor's Mansion in Carson City has been the official residence of the state's governors since 1909. The mansion's ghost is believed to be Governor Denver S. Sparks, who was the first governor to occupy the residence. Sparks served from 1903 to 1908 and was closely involved in the mansion's construction, overseeing many of the design details. He died of a heart attack in 1908, just months before the mansion was completed. Staff members and residents have reported seeing the apparition of a man in a dark suit walking the hallways, particularly on the second floor near what would have been the master bedroom. Some have described the smell of cigar smoke in rooms that have been unoccupied, and doors have been found open that were closed and locked. The most striking report comes from a governor's wife who described seeing a man standing at the foot of her bed, who smiled reassuringly before fading from view. Staff members have also reported lights turning on and off in the mansion's basement and the sound of heavy footsteps on the grand staircase. The ghost is consistently described as benevolent — a proud former governor still watching over the house he never lived to enjoy.
