John Abbott College in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, on the western tip of the Island of Montreal, occupies a campus of buildings that are approximately 100 years old. Students and staff have reported a range of paranormal phenomena in the older sections of the campus, including apparitions wandering the hallways at night, unexplained footsteps in empty corridors, and doors that open and close on their own. The most commonly reported spirit is described as a woman in early 20th-century clothing who has been seen in the older classrooms and in the building's stairwells. Some students have described hearing typing sounds from empty offices and the murmur of conversation from locked rooms. The college's location at the western end of Montreal Island, overlooking Lac Saint-Louis where the St. Lawrence River widens into a broad expanse of water, gives the campus a semi-rural quality that contrasts with the urban intensity of downtown Montreal. The campus grounds include mature trees and older buildings that lend an atmospheric quality, particularly in autumn when the leaves turn and in winter when snow blankets the grounds and the heating systems creak and groan in the old stone buildings.
