The Hotel Alex Johnson in Rapid City, South Dakota, is a Tudor Revival landmark built in 1928 by Alex Carlton Johnson, a vice president of the Chicago and North Western Railway. The hotel, which sits in the shadow of the Black Hills, is said to be haunted by several ghosts. The most prominent is the Lady in White, believed to be a young woman who fell or jumped from the eighth floor in the 1930s. Her apparition has been seen on the eighth floor and in the corridors, described as a beautiful woman in a flowing white gown who appears to be floating rather than walking. Room 812, near where the fall occurred, is considered the most haunted room — guests have reported the television turning on by itself to static, the water faucets running when no one has touched them, and the feeling of someone lying down beside them in bed. The hotel's other reported ghost is Alex Johnson himself, whose cigar smoke is occasionally smelled in the lobby despite the building being smoke-free for decades. Staff members have described elevators traveling to the eighth floor on their own and lobby furniture being rearranged overnight. The hotel openly acknowledges its haunted reputation and has been featured on multiple paranormal television programs.
