Project Blue Book Case #1332. On June 23, 1952, an unidentified object was observed over McChord Air Force Base near Tacoma, Washington — a major Military Air Transport Service installation and air defense facility. This was the first of two Blue Book unknowns from McChord during June 1952, the second coming just six days earlier on June 17 (Case #1298).
McChord AFB served dual roles as a transport hub for Pacific operations and as an air defense station protecting the Puget Sound region. The base's fighter interceptor squadron was responsible for defending Seattle, Tacoma, and the vital Boeing aircraft production complex from potential Soviet bomber attack.
The concentration of two unknowns at McChord within a single week was remarkable. Whether this reflected genuine recurring activity over the base or heightened observer awareness during the building wave, the pattern demanded attention from investigators.
The Pacific Northwest continued to produce significant cases five years after Kenneth Arnold's sighting had launched the modern UFO era. McChord's location near Tacoma — where the famous Maury Island incident had occurred in June 1947 — added to the region's UFO history.
Both McChord cases were classified "Unknown."
