Project Blue Book Case #3517. On April 30, 1955, a fast-moving luminous object was observed in the sky over Travis County, Texas — the county encompassing Austin, the state capital. The object moved at considerable speed while emitting a bright, steady light that distinguished it from conventional aircraft.
Travis County's location in central Texas placed it within range of several major military installations, including Bergstrom Air Force Base on Austin's southeastern edge. Bergstrom was a Tactical Air Command base that hosted fighter and reconnaissance units equipped with some of the Air Force's most advanced jet aircraft. Despite this concentration of aviation activity, the observed object did not match any known military or civilian aircraft operating in the area.
The spring of 1955 was a relatively quiet period for Blue Book compared to the intense wave years of 1952 and 1954, but cases continued to accumulate at a steady rate. The lower volume allowed investigators to devote more attention to individual reports, and cases from this period sometimes received more thorough investigation than those filed during the overwhelming wave periods.
The object's speed was estimated to significantly exceed that of contemporary jet aircraft. Its luminosity remained constant throughout the observation — unlike meteors, which characteristically vary in brightness and have brief durations. The sustained nature of the sighting, combined with the object's controlled trajectory, eliminated natural phenomena from consideration. Blue Book classified the case as "Unknown."
