Project Blue Book Case #376. On May 5, 1949, personnel at Fort Bliss, Texas, observed disc-shaped objects in the sky above the base — one of several such sightings at this sensitive installation during the late 1940s. Fort Bliss was the U.S. Army's primary guided missile center and the American base of operations for captured German V-2 rocket scientists, including Wernher von Braun's team.
The significance of this location cannot be overstated. Fort Bliss and the adjacent White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico constituted America's primary missile and rocket testing complex. Every advanced guided missile in the U.S. arsenal was being developed and tested here. The scientists and military personnel at these facilities were among the most technically sophisticated observers in the world — men who designed and tracked rockets for a living.
The disc-shaped objects were observed during a period when Fort Bliss and White Sands experienced a cluster of unexplained sightings. Between 1948 and 1950, multiple reports of unusual aerial objects — often described as small, fast-moving discs — came from this area. Some were observed through theodolites and tracking telescopes, instruments designed for precise measurement of objects in flight.
Project Sign and its successor Project Grudge investigated these cases with particular seriousness given the extreme sensitivity of the location and the exceptional qualifications of the witnesses. The May 1949 sighting could not be explained by any known missile test, aircraft, or natural phenomenon. The case was classified "Unknown" — adding to a disturbing pattern of unidentified objects appearing over America's most advanced weapons development facility.
