The former Chez Briann Restaurant in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, occupied a building that was originally an apartment house and is now considered one of the city's most haunted locations. The building, located in the historic downtown area of St. John's — one of the oldest European settlements in North America — has a history spanning several centuries. When the property operated as a restaurant, staff and diners reported a range of paranormal phenomena including footsteps on the upper floors when no one was present, the sound of a woman's voice humming or singing in the kitchen area, and cold drafts that swept through the dining room despite sealed windows. Glasses and dishes were reportedly found moved or rearranged after the restaurant closed for the night. The most commonly described apparition is a woman in dark, old-fashioned clothing who has been seen standing at the top of the staircase. Some staff members described feeling a hand on their shoulder when working alone in the building. The identity of the ghost is unknown, though St. John's long history — including devastating fires that swept through the wooden city and the tragic loss of life in the Newfoundland regiment during World War I — provides ample historical context for residual hauntings.
