Project Blue Book Case #5559. On December 17, 1957, witnesses in Fruita, Colorado — a small community in the Grand Valley near Grand Junction — observed a bright object in the sky. The sighting occurred during the waning days of the dramatic November-December 1957 wave that had produced some of Blue Book's most compelling cases.
Fruita sits in western Colorado's high desert landscape, near the Utah border, surrounded by dramatic red-rock canyon country and the Book Cliffs. The area's vast, open terrain provided excellent visibility, and the clear, dry desert air offered optimal conditions for observing aerial phenomena.
The 1957 wave, triggered in part by the Sputnik launches, had produced extraordinary cases including the Levelland, Texas, vehicle-interference encounters and numerous reports from military personnel across the country. By mid-December, the wave was subsiding, but cases continued to trickle in from locations across the American West.
Western Colorado's remoteness meant limited conventional air traffic, consisting primarily of high-altitude commercial overflights and occasional military transits. The object observed over Fruita did not match any expected traffic pattern. Its brightness and behavior were inconsistent with any known aircraft or atmospheric phenomenon.
The case was classified "Unknown" — a late-wave entry from the spectacular skies of Colorado's canyon country.
