Project Blue Book Case #989. On October 11, 1951, a bright object was observed over Minneapolis, Minnesota — the largest city in the upper Midwest. Minneapolis and its twin city St. Paul formed a major metropolitan area with extensive commercial and military aviation, including Wold-Chamberlain Field (now Minneapolis-St. Paul International) and the Minneapolis-St. Paul Air National Guard facilities.
The Twin Cities' position in the northern Midwest placed them along flight paths used by SAC bombers training from bases in the Dakotas and Montana. The region would become increasingly militarized as ICBM deployments spread across the northern plains.
October 1951 was in the buildup period before the great 1952 wave. The case was classified "Unknown."
