Project Blue Book Case #7579. On August 12, 1961, witnesses in Kansas City, Kansas, observed a bright object in the sky over the metropolitan area. Kansas City straddled the Missouri-Kansas border and was home to major defense manufacturing operations, including plants producing components for the B-47 and B-52 bomber programs.
The Kansas City area's aviation infrastructure included the Municipal Airport (now Kansas City International), Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base to the south (a fighter-interceptor station), and the Olathe Naval Air Station. The region's combination of military, commercial, and defense-industrial air traffic created a complex but well-documented aerial environment.
The Atomic Energy Commission also maintained the Kansas City Plant — a massive facility, operated by Bendix Corporation, that manufactured non-nuclear components for nuclear weapons. This added Kansas City to the list of nuclear-related locations that contributed Blue Book unknowns.
August 1961 was during the Berlin Crisis, one of the Cold War's most dangerous periods. The construction of the Berlin Wall, begun just the day before this sighting on August 13 (accounting for time zones), had the world on edge. Military installations were at heightened readiness, and any unidentified objects in American airspace carried additional weight.
No conventional explanation was found. The case was classified "Unknown."
